Law Enforcement Launches State-to-State Speed Emphasis on I-90
Olympia, WA — Law enforcement agencies across Washington will participate in a coordinated, cross-country speed enforcement emphasis along Interstate 90 (I-90), in partnership with law enforcement agencies from coast to coast.
From July 20 through July 27, drivers traveling on I-90—the longest interstate highway in the United States—will see an increased law enforcement presence aimed at reducing excessive speeds and improving overall traffic safety. The multi-state initiative stretches from Seattle, Washington, to Boston, Massachusetts, covering more than 3,000 miles.
In Washington, law enforcement will focus on the westernmost segment of I-90, working closely with neighboring agencies in Idaho and Montana to ensure a unified approach throughout the region.
“This week, drivers traveling along Interstate 90—from Seattle to Boston—will see increased patrols as part of a unified, coast-to-coast speed emphasis effort,” said Chief John Batiste of the Washington State Patrol. “Our goal is simple: to save lives. Excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of serious injury and fatal crashes, and with agencies across the country joining forces, we’re sending a clear message—slow down, drive responsibly, and help make I-90 safer for everyone.”
According to the Washington Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC), speeding was a contributing factor in 34% of all traffic fatalities in Washington in 2024. Enforcement campaigns such as this one have been shown to significantly reduce speeding-related crashes and save lives.
“By collaborating across state lines, we send a strong, unified message: safety has no borders,” said WTSC Director, Shelly Baldwin. “We encourage everyone to plan ahead, give themselves extra travel time, and make safe driving their top priority.”
Motorists traveling on I-90 during this emphasis period are urged to stay alert, obey all traffic laws, and expect to see an increased law enforcement presence.
