Speed management is an approach to address speeding and speed related concerns to lower the likelihood of severe injuries or fatalities by reducing the frequency and severity of crashes. A speed management program or plan should be comprehensive, addressing all factors that influence speeding: public awareness, user behavior, roadway design, surrounding land uses, traffic conditions, posted speed limits, and enforcement.
The SMAC meets virtually the second Monday of the month from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. During the meetings, we learn from each other the consequences of speeding, explore relevant data, discuss established countermeasures to reduce risks, and consider innovative strategies for slowing speeds. In 2025, SMAC meetings will shift to a combination of working groups and cooperative learning as the statewide plan for speed management is developed. Members will have dedicated time to work together to select countermeasures to achieve identified priorities.
